Civil contractors have completed emergency flood protection and bank stabilization measures along Juneau’s Mendenhall River ahead of the annual August peak risk window for glacial outburst flooding.

The infrastructure initiative, executed by Alaska Native Regional Corporation Sealaska, delivers heavy structural armoring designed to prevent catastrophic erosion along riverbanks vulnerable to sudden, high-velocity discharges from Suicide Basin.

Glacial outburst floods—known technically as jökulhlaups—occur when water dammed by glacial ice suddenly releases. In recent years, Suicide Basin releases have driven historic crests along the Mendenhall River, undercutting slopes, destroying residential structures, and threatening municipal infrastructure.

To mitigate the upcoming seasonal threat, construction crews deployed high-density riprap stone, regraded unstable embankment slopes, and reinforced primary protective barriers along key impact zones. The work was fast-tracked to ensure full installation before glacial melt levels peak in mid-to-late August.

The rapid project delivery aligns with broader regional flood hazard mitigation modeling conducted alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and local emergency management authorities. By hardening vulnerable shorelines, the newly installed barriers provide critical hydraulic resistance against swift currents and extreme river volume.

Completion of the project significantly enhances structural resilience for the surrounding community, establishing a durable line of defense against recurring climate and hydrologic hazards in Southeast Alaska.
