WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District recently completed a $14 million high-tech greenhouse complex for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service. The facility, located at the Purdue University Research Park, is designed to provide state-of-the-art controlled environments for critical crop research that addresses global food security and environmental challenges.

The project involved the construction of two large greenhouses, a headhouse for processing and research support, and integrated climate control systems that allow scientists to manipulate light, temperature, and humidity with extreme precision. These capabilities are essential for studying how different crop varieties respond to changing climate conditions and pest pressures.

“Delivering a facility with this level of technical complexity requires a high degree of collaboration,” said Jay Fowler, Louisville District project manager. “Our team worked closely with the USDA-ARS and our contractors to ensure the sophisticated mechanical and electrical systems met the exact requirements needed for sensitive botanical research.”

The new complex replaces older, less efficient structures, providing a more sustainable and capable footprint for the federal research mission. By integrating advanced LED lighting and automated irrigation, the facility reduces energy consumption while expanding the scope of research possible throughout the year. The completion of this project marks another milestone in the long-standing partnership between USACE and the USDA to provide the infrastructure necessary for American scientific leadership in agriculture.
